Longest sentences
Why count sentences?
Sentence count on its own says little. Sentence length says a lot: it is half of every major readability formula, and long sentences are where readers get lost. The distribution above shows whether your writing has a healthy mix, and the longest-sentences list gives you the first candidates to split.
Variety matters for another reason too: very even sentence lengths are one of the patterns AI detectors measure, called burstiness.
Questions people ask
How does the counter decide where a sentence ends?
At a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or line break, while skipping common abbreviations (Dr., e.g., etc.) and decimal numbers.
What is a good average sentence length?
Around 15–20 words for general readers. The UK Government Digital Service advises keeping sentences to 25 words or fewer where you can.
Why does sentence-length variety matter?
A mix of short and long sentences is easier to read and sounds more natural. Very even sentence lengths are also one of the signals AI detectors look for.
